Freight transport in Spain remains dominated by road. More than 951,000 tons of land freight volume is still transported by truck, compared to the European average of 801,000 tons, highlighting the weakness of rail freight and its limited connections to ports. This situation poses a challenge not only to the competitiveness of the logistics system but also to meeting the decarbonization targets set by Brussels for 2030.
A report prepared by Ocean Capital Partners highlights that freight trains can become the backbone of Spanish port logistics and estimates direct cost savings compared to trucks at up to 800 million euros annually.
